I had ordered Brooklyn Biltong (original) a while ago in a 1 lb bag directly from the company website. It was great – very tender, very flavorful. Whether you think its accurate to South African homestyle biltong is subjective, but to me it had great flavor and was very tasty. Fast forward to last week (7/28/22) and my experience could not have been worse. Two bags arrived from Amazon (fulfilled by Brooklyn Biltong) and I was super excited to have it again. Both 16 oz bags were quite pressurized when they arrived. I opened one, reached in, and … ick. The texture was fine, the tenderness was what I recall, but wow was the flavor off. It was like I ate a small handful of biltong coated in unscented hand soap powder or something like talc – EXTREMELY dry and left a weird “I can’t get it out from under my tongue” feeling. Very strange. The first bag I opened was missing a proper ziploc either – it has only one side of a ziploc back. Whatever. I reached out to the company via email and phone and no reply now in about a week. I decided to open the other bag to see if maybe the one was just compromised by the seal or something – nope, also terrible. A real shame because I had recommended this brand to friends, too. Looking through reviews here on Amazon and it seems like it’s the same story – very inconsistent product, sometimes moldy (ew?), no reply from the company in any form. So frustrating and this is NOT a cheap food product. Will not order this again.

Having purchased Biltong for sometime, I was unpleasantly surprised to find quite a bit of mold in the middle of a bag I had opened two days prior. Sadly, purchase date was 9/4 and mold discovery date was 10/6, so I am not eligible for a refund. Best Before date was 8/18/23, yet was so moldy on 9/6/22, despite being opened for only two days. I am in CA and the weather has been very dry, so that wasn’t a factor. I keep unopened bags in a kitchen cabinet in our air conditioned home. I don’t typically refrigerate the Biltong because an 8 ounce bag is usually eaten in 3 to 4 days in our home. As mentioned, I have purchased this brand for over two years and nothing regarding storage nor consumption has changed. Let the buyer beware, I guess. So much for finding the perfect unadulterated “jerky.” I am leery about purchasing it again, as my guess is that it was moldy prior to being opened. Perhaps that would explain some mild stomach discomfort my son experienced. Oh well…

PROs:
Tastes great and a good deal for the quantity of jerky you get. I first found out about this jerky from a website that rated it at the top of their list (see "The Best and Worst of Beef Jerky" from the EatThis website) and I was curious to try it. The main draw for me was the claim that it contained 0 sugars, which is rare to find – every other jerky product I’ve seen has had sugars added to it so this was a pleasant surprise.
CONs:
Frankly, the only downsides I see is that it (1) doesn’t use organic beef and (2) needs refrigeration. Regarding the latter point, to me this is one of the major selling points of jerky – that it doesn’t require refrigeration. Throw it in your backpack for a few days and it will still be good to eat… but not this variety.

Update (01/29/2021): I just recently got the sample packs (2oz) to try out the other two flavors (Steakhouse, Lemon) and I was pleasantly surprised as these were really good. My favorites are still the original and peri-peri. Peri-peri has a nice hit of spice. Love it.
The quality is still the best I have ever had. The slices are perfect and the freshness is there. My suggestion is to get smaller bags, (2oz or the 8oz) as they stay fresher. It’s almost impossible to keep any meat fresh for a long time so the 16oz bag is a challenge for anyone making biltong. Unless you have a full household of South Africans. In which case they will finish bag in no time. As a South African this is the only one to get and it doesn’t make me feel like I need to go back to South Africa to get my biltong fix. Nice work Brooklyn Biltong.

Original review:
Superb quality. Always sliced nicely and fresh. Of all the ones I have tried (you name it, I have tried it), this is also the best value. What I noticed with most other biltong offerings (Bull and Cleaver is one example), is they are all from Braaitime and repackaged/rebranded for the company who’s selling it. From what I can tell Brooklyn Biltong does indeed do their own biltong which makes a huge difference. I am guessing it’s lower yield but higher quality of biltong.

I don’t normally write reviews, but I wanted to make sure everyone knew what a great experience I had dealing with the Brooklyn Biltong team. I found this product via the Eat This, Not That article. I placed the order never having tried the product, and was excited to try it when it showed up to my house. However, right away I noticed that the package was not sealed, and the caveat to refrigerate after opening on the package. Having never tried the product previously, and the fact that this is "jerky"…I had no clue if the product was compromised in freshness. I reached out to the Brooklyn Biltong team through Amazon, and had a reply within hours. I conversed with Ben directly on the issue and shared some pictures for quality control purposes, and was given a replacement bag expeditiously. What a great company to work with. Thanks again!!

Only my 2nd Biltong ever and both were made here in the States and from Amazon. My pal was going to bring me some but it got confiscated at JFK. Probably after years of confiscated beef from the 2 flights a day from South Africa, Brooklyn Biltong was inspired.
I love the list of ingredients on this package. Very simple and possibly the healthiest product I’ve seen yet from any Amazon product. The ingredients hold true to the traditional recopies I’ve searched for with the exception of saltpeter and alum. I love the coriander from the traditional recipes and it gives it a tender and delicious treat. The other version I tried on Amazon has a more American steak flavor but they also use MSG in lieu of traditional preparation.

I really like this biltong. I’ve tried multiple US-made biltong products and this is the one of the few that meets my expectations for taste and texture in comparison to the authentic biltong I enjoyed for years when I vacationed in South Africa. The texture is moist and not too dry. The spice mix is good, but has less coriander than most traditional South African biltong, which can be a positive or a negative depending on your taste preferences. The best part is no sugar, which makes it great for those on Keto diets or low carbers. The only real downside is the price, which is one of the more expensive products on the market. If this came down, it would be easy choice to buy and stock monthly rather than take the time and effort in making my own biltong at home. Definitely worth a try if if you’ve been on the lookout for good biltong in the US.

I’m a big jerky fan and was excited to try something new. I was specifically looking for a grass fed option and this seemed like a good value. While both my husband and I liked the flavor, it just wasn’t intense enough for us. The texture is good (neither too hard nor too soft) and I prefer the smaller pieces to the larger strips of jerky that are so common as it makes for better snacking. Overall, due to miss on flavor, this was a one time purchase for us and the quest for the perfect jerky continues.
The one thing that I would rate one star about this company are the follow-up emails they will send you asking for reviews. In the last couple of days I’ve received two (just unsubscribed). I’d expect that kind of marketing from a company offering a discount or a free trial of a product but to be signed up for emails without opting in after making a full-price purchase is really irritating.
