This is my 3rd Homedics SoundSleep Noise Machine purchase. They work off of either battery power or plug-in and have a variety of sounds to choose from – ocean, nature, white noise, etc. The volume is easily adjustable and the size fits well on a nightstand. Highly reccomend!

My mom has had bad insomnia for several years, more noticeably in the past year as she recovered from knee surgery that left her in a lot of pain even after her knee had "healed". She tried everything for sleep: melatonin, Ambien, a 1/2 glass of wine, herbal remedies, diets, low/no sugar, the list goes on and on. She already was eating healthy and exercising as much as could be expected, but she could not sleep. I got her DVDs and CDs from the library and she hated them all. Then I thought of this on 1/13/13, and now she sleeps!!!!!!
She doesn’t have that blissful perfect sleep that she wants, but now she dozes off and wakes up more rested – without medication for sleep! We’ve had this for 5 days and the change is definitely noticeable!
The sounds are as listed: ocean, summer night, rain, thunder, white noise and brook.
"Ocean" is perfect, the dogs think the beach is in the bedroom and you think a surfer will walk in at any moment!
"Summer Night" has cricket noises and sounds like riding Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland (without the music)
"Rain" is by far the most relaxing.
The "Thunder" one is odd as you would think thunder is a scary noise for some, but hey if it works for you use it!
"White Noise" sounds just like a fan, a kind of noisy fan, but a fan.
"Brook" sounds bubbly and is my least favorite… it sounds like a brook but also like a faucet running.
My mom listens to this very loud for some reason – I can hear it 2 rooms away – but she can sleep with it like that. I come in and turn it down when I go by her room and she doesn’t wake up. The sound is unobtrusive even when it is loud, and when I do hear it I am usually reading or something and it is pretty comforting.
The audio does not sound tinny at all and is very realistic. I was surprised at the sound quality especially when she had it turned up so loud, but it was very good.
I bought this model because it specifically did not have the heartbeat sound – maybe good for kids who have not read Edgar Allan Poe, but not for us!
Note: This one can play ALL NIGHT LONG!! I was afraid the timer feature was the only way to use it as with some other brands/models, but you just turn this on and let it run as long as you want. Thanks to the other reviewer who mentioned that feature.
The unit is very lightweight and I can see how it can be very portable for trips. Not sure how long the batteries would last, so will probably use it with the adapter whenever we can. It is so lightweight, I do think that if you dropped it, it would probably break or crack, so be careful with it.
Definitely worth the money!

Bought to mask snoring. Works well. Has a lot of options and volume control is very helpful. You have to find the right sound for you. Some of them seemed a little irritating instead of restful, but to each his own. That is why the options are so important. I also like the volume control and start out quietly and adjust the volume to where i need it. The buttons are easy to use, even in the dark. The only downside is that the audio is not high quality and can have a tinny sound at times. Again, some of the sound options might be better than others, so the variety is helpful, as well as the volume control in finding something that is tolerable. Overall, it was a good investment for me and helped me sleep through light snoring. When the snoring gets loud I still have to use ear plugs because with the low sound quality you don’t want to turn this thing up too loud. I don’t use the timer function as having the noise suddenly stop would wake me up.

This sound machine is my favorite one so far! It has 5 different sounds but I typically only use the white noise feature on it. It’s perfect for either travel or at home. The option to have it battery operated or plug it in is my favorite because even if the power goes out I can still count on my white noise machine to help my babies sleep through the night. It’s also nice because it’s not highly priced like most out there, it’s affordable, durable, and performs well. I highly recommend this product!

We’ve been using this sound machine almost nonstop since it arrives because we have a newborn — need I say more?!
I really want to give this machine five stars, but after only three weeks, it is experiencing “glitches” where it stops playing the sound for a split second or even up to 10 seconds. That sounds like no big deal until you realize that even a nanosecond halting will turn a calm, sleeping infant into the incredible hulk. If the t-rex’s vision is based on movement, a newborn’s sleep pattern is based on seamless sound (plus a little bit of pixie dust, but it was missing from my stuff mart pick-up order). It’s a precarious state of equilibrium that is about as elusive as a cure for cancer, so when you finally have a moment of peace but a glitching sound machine causes them to stir or fully awake — there can be no five star review.
The pros: low profile, several sound options including rain (our little t-rex’s favorite sound other than her own vocal cords at max volume), ability to run on batteries or plugged into the wall, low cost point.
The con: WHY IS IT GLITCHING?! It has happened twice in the time it took to begin this review. Surely the makers haven’t programmed it to take sadistic pleasure in toying with a sleep-deprived parent’s hope for an uninterrupted hour to “sleep when the baby sleeps”?! Nay, I cannot believe in such a conspiracy; so perhaps my unit is a lemon?
I may give it a good ol’ slap on the hood to see if it ceases from its electrical seizures, or I’ll put it in a box, put that box in another box, mail it to myself, and when it arrives, I’ll smash it with a hammer. Then again, if it has night vision, it has seen my ferocious glares and mayhap that has scared it back into functioning properly. I’ll report back if it has rehabilitated itself, but if this review remains unedited, well, that should be answer enough.
So, buy it if the price is worth three weeks of flawless use. Or maybe try a different one. We have a more bougie machine for my 2yo, a gift from a friend, and perhaps I shouldn’t have been a scrooge and just paid for a more expensive machine and learned the true meaning of Christmas and enjoyed a silent night.

Cheap and effective. Works great to block out the noise in my loud house for my baby to sleep. He is a light sleeping and this is awesome. Solid 10/10

My husband is sleeping with the fan in the winter, mainly for the noise, and I couldn’t stand it any longer. I was tired of freezing when going to bed. I ordered this as a substitute. He likes the thunderstorm sounds on this. I like the white noise. It sounds like a waterfall. I could not listen to the ocean; it sounds like one wave over and over with no change up. The night time sound with crickets is neat but not something I could go to sleep too. The running brook makes me think about going to pee. lol The cool thing about this is we can take it when we travel. I don’t think the sound is all that great, but for the options it has on it, it definitely still warrants five stars. I would order it again.

I had used one of these while in a PTSD inpatient therapy program. I would NOT of been able to sleep with out using one due to all of the issues being brought up in group by the end of the day my mind was still going.. So I purchased one of these to use at home. This sound machine really is a God send. It’s sturdy the sounds are not cheap. It’s clear sounding. Well worth it. I use the white noise selection.

I am reliant on white noise in order to sleep. My previous unit started making funky noises so I knew it was time to replace it. I saw this unit and read all the positive reviews plus the fact that this unit could be battery operated was worthy of at least giving it a try.
This unit doesn’t have a separate power and volume control. It’s all packed together in a dial. With current technology I was surprised to see this and disappointed that I hadn’t noticed this prior to purchasing. This causes the user to have determine what volume to use every night, you can’t jut set it and forget. It also has a rather bright green status light. Would have thought a company making items for use at night in your sleeping area would eliminate this as it’s not a feature and isn’t necessary. I covered the light with a piece of electrical tape and was able to eliminate that defect. There isn’t anything I can about the on/off/volume dial. I would return it if it wasn’t for the fact that this is the only sound machine I’ve ever seen with the ability to operate using batteries. We loose power kinda often so this is a huge feature for me being as reliant as I am on white noise.
Two stars boosted to four solely due to the battery operated option. If it had an on/off button, separate volume control, and no status light this could have been perfect.

LOVE this!! My husband and I usually sleep with 2-3 fans on because we need white noise to be able to get any sleep. But now that it’s winter, the fans are drying out our sinuses and we wake every morning with a headache. Not today though! I slept so good last night with just the sound machine on and feel great this morning!
