I never thought that a mere dictionary/phrasebook could constitute what I regard as an offense to good taste, but this book has done it.
The English-Vietnamese dictionary omits common English words like “improve, hope, restore, heal, positive, positivity, therapy, wellness, wellbeing,” but includes the words “euthanasia, cocaine, heroin, prostitute, cockfighting, venereal disease, urinary infection, rubbish, stupid.” The book presents itself as being for people who are new to Vietnamese, but I wonder why such learners should need to know the latter more than the former.
A portion of the phrasebook is devoted to sexual intercourse and teaches how to shout “Oh my god!” in Vietnamese (see attached image), as if anyone caught in the moment will be thinking about this book.
I’ll let the reader be judge of this.

This Vietnamese phrasebook was just what I was looking for. I originally located it at the library, but realized that I needed a copy of my own for travel.

I want to rate this higher but the mistakes in here make me not fully trust anything. For example, they translate the word “tỷ” to mean “a hundred million” when it really means billion. They also translate film to “fim” when it should actually be “phim”, this one is really bad because The Vietnamese language doesn’t even use the letter “f”. I just can’t trust anything else in here.

Truly pocket-sized. Really nice quality too. The information is very helpful, and I love the easy searchability of phrases per dining, directions, etc. The words are really small though, so if you have trouble seeing fine print, you may need a magnifying glass. I have excellent eyesight so this didn’t bother me, and I appreciate the small size for the compactness.

This book is perfect for someone who is trying to learn Vietnamese. The pronunciation next to the words is very helpful. This book is perfect for traveling since it’s small enough to fit in your jacket pocket. Great product and worth the money.

It helped me to navigate being a vegetarian in south east Asia and to be sociable with the Vietnamese students. The most important phrases we needed to know 😁
