Most fluoride toothpastes contain Sodium fluoride. A few, such as the Colgate Total line here, contain Stannous fluoride. Stannous is considered the more effective form. I don’t think it’s acceptable to post links in Amazon reviews, so I’ll just have to say “google the difference.” The information is not hard to find. So, for me to even bother paying for fluoride in a toothpaste, I want the gold standard, which is Stannous. So there’s that part of the review. There’s detergent-type ingredients which make this stuff foam up like soap. Don’t worry, it doesn’t taste like soap. It’s nice and minty and fresh and not sugary tasting. I put my toothbrush down and let the foam swish around in my mouth for a bit, for longer fluoride contact. And I don’t rinse, as is now common advice, so the stuff sits on my teeth and continues to fight the bad guys. I have not noticed a whitening effect but that’s not why I use this product. I use it for the Stannous fluoride. I’ll stick with it because it’s the best price (and always available on Amazon) of the few toothpastes that do contain Stannous fluoride.
