5 Spice is fun because the blends are often so different. This one is peppery with the addition of both pepper and chili powder, which the two other 5 spices I have here don’t include. So I’ll use this one when I’m looking for just a bit of heat.
The pouches were not very convenient for me — I won’t be using a complete pouch for one recipe and these don’t reseal, so I’ve transferred them all into a spare spice bottle I had on hand.

This order includes 5 packets of this Chinese five spice powder seasoning.
It’s interesting this is called “Chinese five spice” yet the description talks about authentic Vietnamese flavors. As well as lists the spices as: star anise, clove, coriander seeds, cinnamon, pepper, chili powder and fennel seed. Which is 7….
But whatever, this is a great mix. And NO MSG.
Instructions recommended one packet per .5 mg which equates to about one pound. So I used two packets for a crockpot of chicken breasts. Just sprinkled it on the raw breasts, added a bit of water and lettuce it cook. Which I later shredded. Oh my this made the whole house smell so delicious. Very wonderful combination of spices. The outer edges of the breasts really soaked it in, was darker. After shredding I let the shredded chicken marinate in the remaining slices and liquid in the crockpot. So good. Simple. And easy.
