While this berry’s colorful cousins—the blueberry and red raspberry—are grown on bushes, this bright red fruit comes from vines close to the ground. It’s picked when ready to eat, though a strawberry will become a little sweeter if left at room temperature for a day….

The local crops were devastated by the winter rains. They produced really large berries that had very little flavor due to the plants taking on so much rain water and also had very short keeping times. The smaller ones were completely flooded, covered with mud and rotted. Finally, we are starting to get better, more normal sized fruit. My latest box of berries still are not as sweet as they should be for this time of year, so I sprinkled a little sugar on them, let them sit for a few minutes for the juices to be drawn out and that really improved their flavor. Strawberries are my favorite summer fruit so I will keep buying them, thankful that most of the growers haven’t outrageously increased their prices.

These strawberries were very good. Fresh plump flavorful, none were spoiled, moldy, mushy or soft. All were very good. Same price as local grocery store and these were delivered right to my door. I will be ordering these strawberries again. Excellent as snacks, with cream, or ice crream, in cakes, frosting, hold up in baked goodies, short cakes, ands right from the carton.
