This is very good for what it is. However, it is not a “soup base” nor a “seasoning packet” as we typically think of these things, it’s a spice blend only. You’ll need to either buy a pre-made broth to add this into or make some broth.
I typically make my broth in a large pressure cooker (with bones, vegetable scraps, and spices) as I don’t want to spend all day at it. The pressure cooker runs for one hour and the results are every bit as good. Anyway, this product takes the place of some of those spices and gives a nice balance of flavor notes. I would still add salt to achieve a flavorful broth for my pho but I actually appreciate being able to choose how much rather than getting a seasoning blend that may be too salty for my tastes.

These packets are not a fast path to instant pho, but if you use them right, they will give you a very tasty pho. My spouse is the chief pho cook in our house and saves bones in the freezer (chicken and steak bones primarily but some pork rib bones may make it in there too) until he has enough to make soup in the Instant Pot. These packets have some basic instructions on the back on how to actually make pho from bones, but you can find good instructions online for using the instant pot. The instructions say to put the spices in cheesecloth but they already come in a packet that can be dropped in the soup. My spouse added a little bit of fish sauce, soy sauce, and sugar after the broth cooked and we served with cooked sliced steak leftovers, rice noodles, sliced onions, sliced shishito and jalapeno peppers, basil leaves, and hoisin sauce. It was very flavorful. We have a pretty extensive spice collection and these packets were slightly more convenient than dragging all the spices out ourselves, but if you don’t have all the needed spices, these are a good help. Just be aware that making pho is a several hour to all day process and these packets won’t get you there any faster.

I recently tried Vinh Thuan Pho Soup seasoning packets and they blew me away!
The flavor is so authentic and captures the essence of Vietnamese pho perfectly. Just a little bit of this seasoning goes a long way, making it a great value for the price. I love that it comes in a pack of 5, so I can enjoy delicious pho multiple times. This spice mix truly elevates any homemade pho to restaurant-quality.
Highly recommend giving it a try! 5 stars!

I love how easy these were to use thanks to them being in what reminds me of a teabag. Tastes great and isn’t salty, so make sure if you like your broth salty, add some if you desire. I basically just eyeballed the water and proceeded to dump noodles in, along with veggies and meat [chicken] for an easy soup. It wasn’t traditional at all, but tasted great and was an easy meal after a long day.

When I ordered this, I thought I could just throw one of these packets into a pot with some pho stuff and it would be as easy as that…turns out it’s not and there’s not really anything on the product page that indicates that. This is the reason for my rating, because I feel as though it should be made clearer what this product is and what it’s meant to accomplish. I’ve put off reviewing this because I kept thinking I would get all the ingredients together and give it a try but honestly just haven’t had the time or energy to go to all the work yet.

Like the individual pack for single use which is good to preserve freshness of the spices. It is very easy to use for soup base. And we added basic ingredients such as noodle, beef slices, beef balls, onion, cilantro, green onion, plus salt since the packet is unsalted. The homemade Pho was delicious, I would say it’s quite successful for first attempt. Highly recommended.

I didn’t use these seasoning packs as intended to make pho, but have used it to help enhance some curries. The spices these contain are ones that I almost always have stocked up, but I definitely can see how this is convenient for someone who doesn’t cook Eastern food often. You’re given a pretty good ratio of the spices, and they’re as good as it gets for something that’s prepackaged and ready to use. They come in tea bags that are good to steep in soups or broths, but there’s also nothing stopping you from tearing a bag open and just throwing in the spices whole.

This was my first time trying to make pho. I didn’t quite follow the directions on the back of the package because I didn’t find them very useful. It actually doesn’t mention how to use this base at all or how much water to add, seasonings to add, etc. So I just winged it. I threw this in water and boiled it. I don’t think I did it for as long as I should have, because I could taste the essence of the spices, but they were a bit mild. I was impressed though that I could actually smell and lightly taste what I expected, so that is pretty cool that I don’t need to measure out ingredients I probably don’t have. I didn’t add salt though and now realize I should, as there is none in this packet. This is great to have on hand and next time I’ll try it in a stock instead.

This seasoning requires that you make basically everything from scratch. I love pho but it’s much more involved than I thought. If you enjoy cooking and have time for it, this seasoning might be worth it.

I absolutely love pho. We had some of the best in New Orleans so I never had to make it, which is good because real pho broth is a long process. Since we moved I have not been finding good local pho. Pho is about the only food I can stand star anise in. I don’t like five spice powder, I make my own and substitute fennel for anise, I don’t like licorice, ugh! but something about it mixing in with the all the flavors of pho just make me eat the bowl and want more.
But if I buy anise it’s going to sit on my shelf forever. This seasoning packet means I can have the spices pre mixed, not have to buy a lot I won’t use, and speeds up the process. I find it handy and convenient, and it tastes good! Is it as good as the pho I had in NOLA? No, is it better than what I can get around here and I can make it in 1/4 of the time, yes! Yum
